Our Commissions

GALA Choruses has consistently been at the forefront of creating new music - particularly those done by underrepresented voices. We have had several commissions over the years created by and LGBTQIA+ musicians. Of particular note is the Cathy Roma Commission. Cathy Roma is the founder of both the Anna Crusis Feminist Chorus of Philadelphia and Muse Cincinnati Women's Choir. Upon her retirement from Muse, both GALA Choruses and Muse collaborated to create a commission for the promotion of women and feminist musicians and stories.

Cathy Roma Commission

The mission of the Dr. Catherine Roma Women Composer Commissioning Project is to fund new collaborations between GALA member choruses and women composers, resulting in new works that celebrate diversity, promote social justice, and stir the human spirit.

Pauli Murray Commission

Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray: civil rights activist, lawyer, poet and ordained priest. Pauli was born in 1910 and today would have likely identified as transgender or nonbinary.
