"When Thunder Comes" was commissioned by One Voice Mixed Chorus and premiered in 2016. It was composed by Mari Esabel Valverde for a concert in collaboration with Mu Daiko Taiko ensemble and features taiko drums! The text comes from a children's book that features short poems honoring civil rights activists. The poet, J. Patrick Lewis was the third U.S. Children's Poet Laureate (now called the Young People's Poet Laureate).This song is Valverde’s most performed composition with over 100 performances around the world.
