Outside Voices is a lesson plan for educators that explores the power and importance of storytelling, learn to craft our own story through performance art, and build our skills to perform our stories from a place of power.
In this unit, we will explore the power and importance of storytelling, learn to craft our own story through performance art, and build our skills to perform our stories from a place of power.
The Importance of Storytelling: Students will be able to define storytelling, identify well-known stories that impact the American experience, and explain three reasons that storytelling is important to social action.
The Craft of Storytelling: Students will be able to identify the key components of a successful story (protagonist, lightbulb moment/climax, obstacles and goals, transformation/realization) and formulate their first draft of their story.
From Story to Expression: Students will transform their story into a draft performance art piece that is 2-5 minutes in length and is appropriate for a public audience.
Clarity, Brevity, and Emotion in Your Story: Students will edit their performance piece using recommendations from articles.
Practice Makes Perfect: Students will perform their pieces in front of partners to continue to revise and improve their performances.
Final Touches: Students will be prepared for a final performance of their piece.
River City Mixed Chorus performed the world premiere of Sincerely Yours, Pauli Murray, a multi-movement composition that chronicles the life and work of American civil rights activist, Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
Phoenix, Colorado’s Trans Community Choir was founded in September 2015 by Sam Bullington as a fully collaborative grassroots community of individuals who believe in the transformative potential of the arts for personal empowerment and societal change. Although many of its members are trans-identified, the choir is home for anyone who does not fit neatly into the gender binary, as well as all those touched by trans issues, including partners, parents, friends, and allies. The chorus is based in Broomfield, with singers from all over the Front Range, and performs frequently at community events.
